Frequently Asked Questions
What is biodiversity and how can it help my business?
Biodiversity is the term used to describe all the living plants and animals on earth and it includes all the habitats that they make up. A wide range of industrial materials are derived directly from biological resources. These include building materials, fibers, dyes, rubber and oil. In addition, biodivesity and the ecosystem goods and services it provides are considered to be fundamental to healthy economic systems. The degree to which biodiversity supports business varies between regions and between economic sectors, however the importance of biodiversity to issues of resource security (water quantity and quality, timber, paper and fibre, food and medicinal resources etc) are increasingly recognised as universal. As a result, the loss of biodiversity is increasingly recognised as a significant risk factor in business development and a threat to long term economic sustainability.
