The problem with parking is that there isn’t enough (or there are too many cars). In the UK transport accounts for around 23% of the UK’s carbon footprint, of which road transport accounts for around 21%. Transport is an essential element of a successful business; whether it’s the delivery of goods and services, for attending meetings and conferences or commuting to and from the workplace. Driving is still the most popular form of transport in UK, and in Aberdeen, the number of car users is 24% higher than the Scottish national average, which puts even more strain on Aberdeen’s main commuter routes. This, coupled with insufficient cycle routes and public transport services to the City’s key industrial areas creates a vicious cycle which only serves to keep individuals and businesses in their cars and the pressure on available parking.
However, this could be set to change with the increasing number of transport challenges faced by local businesses. Challenges such as no or insufficient parking, insufficient public transport, rising fuel costs, reducing the company’s carbon footprint and increasing restrictions on parking within Aberdeen City are having an effect as businesses begin to ask what they can do about it.
This event aims to highlight the key transport issues in NE Scotland, present solutions to car use and parking challenges, identify available help and support for local businesses, and showcase incentive and travel schemes already in use by 2 local businesses.
