Zero Waste Scotland Small Business Support Programme

Increase your business efficiency and save money by receiving a free resource efficiency review through the Zero Waste Scotland Small Business Support Programme.

Since April 2008 the Small Business Support Programme has assisted 416 small businesses through FREE onsite support focusing on opportunities to reduce waste production, packaging, raw material and water use. To date we have identified potential savings within small Scottish businesses of over £2.5 million by eliminating 13,389 tonnes of waste from landfill, and reducing 136,298,000 litres of water and 9 million KWh of energy.

It is recognised that without intensive support, many small businesses do not have the resources to improve their environmental performance to the extent required to mitigate adverse environmental change. The aim of the initiative is to provide a practical focus for the Scottish Government’s commitment to small businesses and the environment by providing free assistance to Scotland’s small business community, in order to realise cost savings, new sales, reduced risk and competitive advantage through improvements in resource efficiency.

Through the initiative, the programme will provide flexible, client-led, practical support to small businesses, aimed at the implementation of cost saving environme

ntal improvements. Onsite support will primarily focus on opportunities to reduce waste production, packaging, raw material and water use. Other areas covered as part of the on-site review include energy efficiency and waste management, and for businesses in the tourism sector, assistance towards Green Tourism Business Scheme accreditation.

Zero Waste Scotland is the new programme created by the Scottish Government to support delivery of its Zero Waste Plan.

Zero Waste Scotland has been created to provide a one-stop-shop for support and advice to individuals, businesses and local authorities in order to help them reduce waste, recycle more and use natural resources more efficiently.

It will integrate the activities of WRAP Scotland, Waste Aware Scotland, Keep Scotland Tidy, Remade Scotland, Envirowise in Scotland, NISP in Scotland, and some programmes delivered by the Community Recycling Network for Scotland.

The full integration of these programmes will take place throughout 2010/11.
